A small loan is a huge help for Tanzanian entrepreneurs

As we get ready to celebrateThanksgiving in San Diego , somewhere in the district of Bukoba near the shores of Lake Victoria in the African nation ofTanzania , Rosemary Paula is roasting the fish that her husband caught in a nearby river so she can sell them in the local marketplace.

Julita Felix is distilling banana juice into lubisi, a banana beer, which she sells to the men of her village.

And Grace Mshongi is sitting in a stall in the open-air market, selling batik fabrics and fashions that she made by hand. Read More....

Weitzberg: Local woman proves there is hope for all of us

Over 2.8 billion people worldwide live in poverty, according to the United Nations. One woman and her organization are slowly changing that figure though.

About a year and a half ago I was introduced to an organization based in San Diego, The Women’s Global Network (WGN). At first glance, it seemed like just another organization to meet professionals and give back to the community, but after much exploration, this organization, and its founding owner, Linda Lattimore, has had a strong impact on my life and the life of over 100 women across the globe. Working It (page 116)

So who says networking has to be all business? The Carlsbad-based Women’s Global Network (WGN) also believes girls just want to have fun. From a “Networking at Sea” Baja cruise to a Temecula wine tour via limo, the year-old organization takes the work out of making connections. Founded by attorney and business strategist Linda Lattimore, WGN is a community of 100-plus women joining forces to achieve professional and personal success. Lattimore, a former federal prosecutor, says her passion is not only to help women grow their businesses but to realize their dreams. To that end, seminar topics have included “Discovering the Secret to Your Happiness” and “A Tool box for Making Love Last.” The group sponsors dozens of events each year, including dinners, panel discussions, spa parties, and a monthly round of golf to talk business – not to mention socialize – on the back nine. Whatever the event, WGN seems to be working – it launche3d a Young Professional arm this summer, while expanding to Orange County and Dallas. (760/635-5785, www.wgn-global.com)

Women hit the links for connections
Mary Curran-Downey - March 4, 2007

What I don't know about golf could fill a Torrey Pines sand trap.

I do know that after several frustrating attempts – and pockmarking a local course with divots the size of ground squirrels – that it just makes more sense to stick to hiking Blue Sky Preserve than any golf course's back nine, or front 18, or... Read More

A long time in the making, women’s networking group is taking off fast
Leah Masterson - May 10, 2007

The Women’s Global Network was established in October, but the idea has been germinating for 12 years.

Linda Lattimore, a Carlsbad lawyer and business strategist, started a business plan in 1994 for an organization that would provide women with what she says are the real tools needed to succeed in business, not something esoteric.

Then life got in the way, but 12 years later... Read More
